SOLVOMET, KU Leuven’s Research and Innovation Centre for Circular Hydrometallurgy, supports mining, metallurgical, and recycling companies in developing sustainable, circular, and low-energy hydrometallurgical and solvometallurgical processes through advanced lab and mini-pilot facilities.

Led by Prof. Koen Binnemans, a world-leading expert with over 30 years of experience in rare earths and the originator of the concept of circular hydrometallurgy and its 12 principles, SOLVOMET contributes to REE-FLEX by advancing eco-efficient metal recovery solutions essential for the transition to a climate-neutral society. The centre is embedded in the KU Leuven Institute for Sustainable Metals and Minerals (SIM² KU Leuven (clickable link)) and has a strong record of collaboration with industry and participation in EU-funded projects, including EIT RawMaterials Upscaling Projects.

Carester provides tailored, sustainable solutions for companies involved in rare-earth extraction, offering expertise in process design, development, and optimization to meet specific technical and environmental challenges. Building on this expertise, Carester is establishing its own Caremag production facility in France, which will combine recyclable materials and mineral concentrates to create a more circular and responsible model for rare-earth oxide production.

As a leading European innovator in rare-earth chemistry, Carester is committed to advancing efficient, environmentally friendly industrial processes and strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy in critical materials. Through the Caremag recycling unit and the construction of the largest heavy rare-earth separation facility in the Western world, Carester aims to accelerate the energy transition and position Europe at the forefront of sustainable rare-earth supply.
